Rekey or Replace: Start With the Reason

Before you ask for the locks to be changed, finish this sentence: I want to change them because... The answer might be a missing key, a difficult handle or a door that no longer shuts properly. Each points to a different part of the job, even though people often use the same phrase for all three.

Rekey or Replace: Start With the Reason service setting
Good to know before a service visitClear words. Useful details.

If the concern is who has a key

Rekeying is about access. For a suitable lock, the internal key arrangement changes and the old key no longer operates that rekeyed cylinder. Sound handles and other visible hardware may be able to remain. This can be worth discussing after a move or when someone should no longer have access.

Include the right doors. A new front-door key does not affect a different side-door lock, a keypad code or an old garage remote. Make a short list of the access methods you want reviewed so the result matches the reason for the work.

If the concern is how the door behaves

A sticking bolt, loose handle or damaged cylinder calls for an assessment of the fault. Rekeying does not repair every mechanical problem. Nor will a new lock necessarily resolve pressure caused by poor door fit. Describe what happens with the door in normal use and any recent change around it.

Replacement may make sense when the existing hardware is unsuitable, damaged or cannot support the intended change. Ask why a different fitting is recommended, what can remain and whether the new parts match the door preparation. Buying a product first can make that conversation harder.

Before you agree

Settle the scope in concrete terms: which locks, which key groups, how many keys and what hardware. For a Dallas rental or shared entrance, confirm who approves the work. A tenant's own door and the building entrance may belong to different arrangements.

Compare estimates for the same result, including parts, labor and the visit. When the work is complete, try the included doors and keys yourself. Keep a clear record of what changed and ask about the written terms that apply to the work.

Can one visit include both rekeying and repair?

It may, depending on the hardware and the fault. Name both concerns when you inquire so a key change is not mistaken for the full repair you intended.

Who can help discuss the choice?

Call LockReach at 214-613-0113 with the Dallas address and the reason you want the change. You can start with the problem rather than selecting a product.
